Macbook Pro, Parallels and WinXP

Today I finally installed WinXP using Parallels on a MacBookPro. Too bad it wasn’t my MacBookPro. However, it was an interesting experience, everything just worked. Since Lance didn’t require any multimedia drivers for Windows all I needed to do in Parallels was give the virtual machine a some hard drive space (2GB), bridged access to the network and access to the DVD drive.

After that, the WinXP installation was standard issue. When Windows booted for the first time the network worked and I could change screen resolutions. No problems. Getting sound / multimedia to work might require the drivers from Bootcamp.
I did experience first hand how much the MBPs heat up! Holy cow! While installing XP the MBP got hot enough that I could feel heat rising off the keyboard. The bottom was hot, not burning but getting uncomfortable. Definitely not suitable as a laptop! We’ll see how much help the SMC firmware update is.

After the experience I want to upgrade to a MB/MBP even more. However, I’ll wait until for the MBP’s with the Memrons, Dual layer DVD burners and hopefully hybrid perpendicular HDDs! Oh, and hopefully they won’t burn a brown spot onto my desk!

  2. Nice blog, check mine out at http://www.virtualizationandstreaming.blogspot.com. It is off the Ardence clock but probably monitored by them so I can’t write anything. I just started so let me know if you have any recommendations.
