“I’m also told the iPhone will be available on a two or three year contract, and a data plan must also be purchased (data plans in Canada aren
’t cheap). Looks like an accurate release date in Canada is sometime Q4 2007 and into early 2008. About the same time that the phone will be available to European carriers.”
Fun discussion on Digg on the availability of the iPhone in Canada. I’m pretty much over the iPhone, I can’t imagine forking out an arm, leg and kidneys for the ridiculous cost of data plans in Canada. The bright side may be that the cell providers here are likely to update their data plan prices to be more reasonable. I suspect that a small customer base (Canada only has 32 million people) and the relative monopoly is what’s keeping prices high.
The big factor in cel carrier competition in Canada may well be the upcoming changes allowing for mobile number portability. Will this affect data plans? Unsure, but I hope so.
I think it’s a no-brainer that Rogers will carry the iPhone in 2007 tho - they are the only GSM provider anyway.
Rogers and Fido. My friend has a SE K790a EDGE phone on their network and it gets pretty good reception. I think he pays like $5.00/mo for 2MB or something like that. That is still pretty expensive.
