I hated MySpace. Mostly because a lot of people’s profiles make my eyes want to bleed. Then I had a good MySpace experience. After swearing off MySpace I joined again because I really wanted to listen to Apologize by OneRepublic. I heard on The Beat 94.5 (a local radio station) about their collaboration with Timberland and their MySpace success.
Then something really interesting happened. I posted a comment on OneRepublic’s page because their album release date is on Nov 20th, 2007, which is also my 28th birthday and another band, c o o p e r sent me a really nice personalized message suggesting I check out their music.
I’m a sucker for personalized messages (maybe I’m just love starved) so I did. I have to say that I am a new fan of their music. Their song Aftertaste is really really good. That is saying a lot because I generally listen to a lot of progressive trance. You should listen to it at their website (or on their myspace page) let them know what you think.
Generally I don’t whore out my blog to promote other people’s stuff (unless they are family) but this experience was interesting enough to write about. It really goes deep into the new social medium of the web. The dynamics at play here.
- Traditional radio plug got me to visit a MySpace page
- I posted a comment to a band I just heard of
- A totally new band messaged me because of my comment (nice guerrilla marketing guys)
- I love their music
- I’m blogging about them now because of #4, they were nice and I want them to succeed.
- All of the above happened in less than 24 hours.
This has really changed my mind about using MySpace. :)

A positive experience, I guess; but they’re far outweighed by the potential negative experiences.
An interesting post about it…
