About Benson Wong

I think the big thinks.

I am a technology geek. Well perhaps Technology Otaku would be a more accurate description. I am the Senior Real Estate Technologist at Sutton Group Canada’s premiere real estate company. At Sutton I manage both the system admin and web development teams.

Why I love computers

I’m online a lot. Chances are I’m online right now. I love being on the computer because I love knowledge and learning new things. A little more than a decade ago (about 10% more as I write this) I was in high school. I grew up a small Canadian town and we didn’t get decent Internet until the early 90’s.

Asking why computers are great is akin to asking why hammers are great. It is what this tool enables us to do that is great. I love computers because I love knowledge, even if that knowledge is mostly useless

This is MostlyGeek.com

In this age everybody needs their own digital playground. MostlyGeek.com is mine. The domain is fitting because I believe that balance is essential to a good life. I’m as avid about Crossfit as I am about technology. Well almost. :)

What I’ve been doing

For the past 4 years I’ve worked at Sutton and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to work on some very cool projects there. I started as doing basic web programming and Unix system administration and since then I’ve grown to manage a very good technology team.

Some of the projects that I have been a part of:

  • Sutton’s Email 2.0 Project
  • Sutton’s Email 3.0 Project
  • Sutton.com 2.0
  • Technology management
  • Implementation of Active Directory
  • Implementation of DFS
  • Implemented Jira and Confluence
  • Building an office’s IT infrastructure from scratch

Where I am going

When I was 25 I said to myself that I’ll be out of the trenches and into business in 5 years. That deadline is quickly approaching and I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a certain amount of reforming required to un-tech myself. Sometimes it feels like learning how to walk again.

How to get in touch with me

Email is my preferred method.

What to ask me

I like providing technology consulting. I’m comfortable on the command line, in web development and in server administration. I’ve also managed some decent sized projects. It’s totally cool to ask me about IT management, my main focus of the past two years.

I find most question that begin with “How do I… ” pretty boring. However, asking questions that begin with “what do you think about…”  or “we are trying to accomplish… ” makes my neurons fire.
